Roots Underground rolls into 2011

Allyn and I are kicking things off this year with a push to get the farm going. It has been tough for me to find focus and a general direction to carry myself in now that school is over, so I have decided to make this second season count and try to move Roots Underground forward. Having said that, this blog and the farm web page (www.rootsunderground.net) are a small stepping stone for this new year's season, and I can begin coordinating where we'll be planting this coming spring. Erik from Jubilee Farm was eager to help us and leased us an acre of his land this season, but I suspect he wants to help other new farmers too so we should find a better place to set up camp for the 2011 season. Hopefully this happens sooner than later.

We will be publishing flyers for our 2011 summer food CSA subscription and Pancake Patch small grains workshop. Should this upcoming season be  warmer and earlier than the 2010 season, we should be able to offer a greater diversity of vegetables, taters, dry beans, and grains and stuff boxes full for all to enjoy. Food subscription details will soon be posted at www.rootsunderground.net/csa/csa.html, and I encourage all to contact me via email at mike@rootsunderground.net

The Pancake Patch grain workshop should be an exciting family U-pick affair involving scythes, sickles, and most importantly, the Thresh Beast. It should take place in mid to late July depending on the weather, and prices are $30 per family. Participants should take home up to five pounds of whole grain and insight into the seedy side of growing grains at home. We will be able to provide a Pancake Patch workshop date as our 2011 grain harvest begins to ripen and schedules solidify.

Until next year...
